Thanks for the tip on the Guru Papers. Such a good laugh.

I read an extract online.

http://freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/i/iskcon/guru-papers/

The cults described are the games of memes. Extreme, but memes nonetheless. As to what kind of leader you find in any of them. The luck of the draw perhaps?

thanks again. Olga

thanks Lioba and great to hear from you.

I was wondering if this discussion would lead some people to think I was talking about my Teacher. I am assuming that's what you meant because you referred to the Guru Papers. If I have made the wrong assumption - I apologize for the confusion.

Regardless, its a good chance to be absolutely clear that I am NOT talking about my teacher. I have nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for my teacher and I would disagree with anyone that called him a narcissist. Or that thought he had ordinary skills. Personally I think he is a genius.

So that point aside. What I think it is really important to understand what is going on with the personality cults that operate at lesser levels ie lower down the food chain.

These meme sub groups are often run by personalities that do have rather ordinary skills and do have a lot narcissism going on. I think its quite shocking the level of influence that these sub groups have over others and I think it happens largely unconsciously. It starts in the school yard as we grow up and then we find it in the workplace and all the other organizations that we might belong to.

Having worked with hundreds of organizations over decades of management consulting, I describe countless numbers of these sub groups and memes and the way they operate.

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

Love, Olga

Very interesting read, Olga, thank you! Went through this two years ago after reading 'The Guru Papers' which helped me putting my ambivalence into words.
Curious how you are at this point!

My husband and I visited Meryemana Evi 26 September 2010 which was sunny and very hot. I had a sore throat since we arrived in Turkey 5 days before. We went by bus tour, and were rushed to re-board as soon as Sunday Mass there was over. However we had a brief but beautiful few moments to kneel in the holy house, and pray. I took a couple of empty water bottles to take some water from the spring flowing from the terrace below the house: it was refreshingly ice cold, and I took a bottle to my husband on the bus, who was hot and tired. He was grateful to drink it; and I drank after he did. A few minutes later I noticed that my sore throat was gone, and did not return.

I am deeply touched that Our Lady cured me of this without my even wanting to bother her with it, because I had been praying at the shrine for more important things: conversions, vocations to the priesthood, and the reunification of Christian churches. What a kind and attentive mother she is!

There is something utterly magical and mysterious about Leonard Cohen's performance here. I have listened to it about 10 times and each time I feel more. Some of his lines just keep digging in - in ways that the other performances don't pass.
